Video game area - 14th Impact
Video games are one of the most important part of Japan Expo and this year too, the biggest editors and a lot of associations were here, ready for 4 exceptional days with signing sessions, exclusivities, conferences and demos and more!
The guests of honor
For this 14th Impact, the Square Enix Guests of Honor held two highly awaited conferences on the video game stage. The first one on Thursday was focused on the Final Fantasy license, with Naoki YOSHIDA, who made quite an impression with his unexpected entrance, Yoshinori KITASE and Motomu TORIYAMA. The second one, on Saturday, was on the Kingdom Hearts series with its director, Shinji HASHIMOTO, the showman of this conference and also Tetsuya NOMURA, one of the biggest surprise of the festival who was for the first time on stage!
Want some premieres?
Square Enix had quite a lot of announcements and exclusivities: collector editions for Final Fantasy X-X2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XIV and you could try Lightning Returns : Final Fantasy XIII and others on their booth. With some exclusive trailers, special content and game levels presented for the first time at the festival, the least to say is that their program was packed!
For Nintendo, Akihito HINO, CEO of Level-5, gave a masterclass in which he talked about his creative process on games like Professor Layton and some new projects. He also said he wants to localize Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney in Europe.
The booth was transformed into a little village for the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and you could try a lot of different games: Pikmin 3, Phoenix Wright 5, the newest Zelda and Shin Megami Tensei games and more.
Hideo BABA announced on the Namco Bandai Stage, on Saturday, the soon to be released Tales of Symphonia HD Chronicles with Japanese voices but also a news the fans of the series eagerly awaited: Tales of Xillia 2 is confirmed in Europe.
The demo of the first Tales of Xillia was on the booth with others like Project X Zone, Pac-Man DX+ and other famous franchises like Tekken Revolution, and Katsuhiro HARADA was also here to present this game, or One Piece which all got their own events.
Konami was on the video game stage with the exclusive presentation of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. The whole prologue was revealed including the first boss of the game.
For those who like online games, Ankama did not lack activities on its booth and with the new bosses of DOFUS and WAKFU, you had your hands quite full in-between two plastic swords fights!
And the Transformice team was here, you could easily spot their fans in the festival, all were proudly wearing mice ears on their heads!
Microsoft and its presentation of the Xbox One gathered quite some attention with some awaited exclusivities like Dead Rising 3 on Thursday. And on Saturday, it was Sony’s turn with the presentation of Beyond Two Souls, an ambitious and original game that promises to be quite epic!
Freeplay and co.
With a whole part of the festival dedicated to video games, the place was crowded from beginning to end and people of every age and taste could play a game or two!
For retrogaming fans, Shinya ARINO or ARINO Kacho, the famous Japanese retro game tester of Game Center CX, was here to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show. His reputation is already solid and after 10 years and 158 games, his level is still the same! He finished last against the CPU on Mario Kart in 150cc… He then asked people in the public to come and challenge him on stage during this very special event.
The associations also gave you the opportunity to play a large panel of games on different consoles and to feel just like home, on a couch! Whether you prefer to play games from your childhood or more recent ones, you had quite the choice!
Freeplay is an institution at Japan Expo so, with friends or family, just for fun or during one of the tournaments organized all through the festival. And thanks to association like DDR Belgium or Epitanime, you could challenge each other, play solo and coop to see if you have the moves on the numerous games on their booths.
Kayane was also here to meet and beat her fans on fighting games, on stage and on her booth! Even if it was just for the fun of it, well let's be honest, her fans had no chance against her!
For Tetsuo Hara’s fans, the manga guest of honor of this 14th Impact, an exhibition with the Hokuto no Ken games was held by the members of Raconte-moi un manga: from old to new, and even board games, the whole collection was here!
Another face of video games was also here thanks to Vantan School, if you wanted to learn about design in video games, the different workshops organized on different themes were here for the most curious ones!
