Biographie

Born in 1949, Moto HAGIO is part of the first generation of women illustrators to get involved in Shôjo, Manga for girls, during the 1970’s. Until then, most Shôjo Manga were created by men (Osamu TEZUKA, Leiji MATSUMOTO, Fujio AKATSUKA, etc.). However, these women Mangaka were limited to specific genres. For these, they created a whole new graphic and narrative language and focused a lot on the characters’ psychology.
Moto HAGIO’s works belong to science fiction and fantasy literature. They are both psychological and poetic. She has soon become a major figure of Manga produced by women. In more than 40 years of career, she made more than 200 stories and 20 million copies sold and have reached public at large, not only Shôjo Manga readers.
Since 2011, Moto HAGIO has been invited as a professor in Joshibi University, the oldest art school in Japan for women.
