Biography

Born in 1941 at Shiogama, Masao MARUYAMA obtains a degree in Hôsei University in 1963. He begins his career in the studio of the greatest Manga master, Osamu TEZUKA. Inside Mushi Production studio, he works on various popular series like Princess Knight and Ashita no Joe.
In the early 1970’s, Mushi studio suffers from a serious financial crisis. MARUYAMA then decides to start his own animation studio with other colleagues: Rintarô, Yoshiaki KAWAJIRI and Osamu DEZAKI. This is how Madhouse studio is founded on October 17, 1972.

At first, MARUYAMA works as a writer on series that are produced by other animation studios like Tokyo Movie or Toei Animation. But when Osamu DEZAKI leaves the executive board in 1980, MARUYAMA enter the board and decides to change the studio’s policy. As the main producer and creative director, he chooses to produce more full length movies.

The 1980’s brings some success to the studio, especially with the movie Barefoot Gen, adapted from the Manga. However, true success doesn’t come before the 1990’s when the studio comes back to the series productions.
From that time, Masao MARUYAMA and Madhouse have collaborated with some of the greatest names in Anime and Manga such as Satoshi KON, Naoki URASAWA and CLAMP. Madhouse’s catalogue now counts many references as Anime series: Monster, Death Note, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Trigun. But also Anime movies that left a trail in the history of the animation movies: Barefoot Gen, Metropolis, Summer Wars and the four movies that Satoshi KON ever directed.
Now at the age of 70, Masao MARUYAMA’s career is far from being done since he created a new animation studio last year called Mappa for all his new projects.
