Othello is a game whose origins are completely Japanese. Like any member of the Othello French Federation could tell you, this game has been invented in 1971 in Japan by Goro HASEGAWA. His father was an English teacher and suggested the name Othello, making a parallel with the many twists and turns of Shakespeare's famous play.
This game is close to Reversi, except for two differences: only one starting position is allowed and you can borrow counters from the opponent if he has to pass.
As soon as 1973, the game is a commercial success in Japan and the first national championship is organized. In 1976, Othello invaded the US and the UK.
