Presentation

Nowadays, jôruri has become one of the three major arts of the Japanese theater, with the and the kabuki, and it is still performed on the biggest Japanese stages. Its name comes from the tale Princess Jôruri (deriving from the epic and romantic novel called Jôruri-hime monogatari, of the early 12th century), a love story between the young Ushiwakamaru and the princess Jôruri.

This tale was such a success among the Japanese population, that it gave its name to the sung tales and songs of . It was only later, during the Edo Period (1600-1868), that the jôruri songs, accompanied by the shamisen (a three-stringed Japanese lute), combined with puppet shows to create the art we now call jôruri.
