Giovanni’s Island: a movie poster packed with surprises!
For the release of the animated movie Giovanni’s Island, Japan Expo reveals in exclusivity to its public the official poster! And as a bonus, the announcement of the movie premiere, in the presence of the director!
In partnership with Kazé, Japan Expo has the pleasure to reveal to you the official poster of the animated movie Giovanni’s Island, which is to be released on May 28th of this year!
Based on a true story and directed by Mizuho Nishikubo and the Production I.G. studio (Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers), Giovanni’s Island is a long-standing project from Shigemichi Sugita, the movie scriptwriter.
The movie’s team included many talented persons, such as the Argentin artistic director Santiago Montiel, for the settings. His unique style, like brush strokes, give the movie a warm atmosphere. The characters were created by Atsuko Fukushima, who has also worked, among others, on the animated movies Kiki’s Delivery Service and Akira.

Synopsis :
1945 : After their defeat, the Japanese live in fear of the arrival of the U.S. forces. In the North, in the tiny island of Shikotan, life is organized between the reconstruction and the fear of invasion. This small piece of land, away from everything, will eventually be annexed by the Russian army. Then begins a strange cohabitation between the families of Soviet soldiers and the inhabitants of the island, who are opposed in every way. Hope is reborn through the innocence of two children, Tanya and Junpei…
