A lesson in animation with Makoto SHINKAI
Self-taught animation artist, Makoto SHINKAI has become a true reference in animation movies. He spent the whole day at Japan Expo with Kazé publishers.
At 11:45 this morning, Japan Expo stage was more of a classroom than a stage: Makoto SHINKAI gave a real masterclass teaching the steps of an animated movie fabrication in front of a very studious audience.

To illustrate his explanations, the director had prepared some exclusive trailers making-of: 5 cm per Second, Ef: a Fairy Tale of Two (visual novel) and Children Who Chase Voices. Neophytes have thus learnt that the making of an animated movie counts 5 key steps: the script, the storyboard, the layout, the coloring and the animation.
One of Makoto SHINKAI’s main strength is the precision of his storyboards, point at which the essential of the animation is already mainly done, as Hayao MIYAZAKI.
After this well-filled conference, he went to Kazé booth for signings and for an intimate meeting with his fans who had the opportunity to share a conversation with him for one and a half hour.
To end this encounter of a day, the artist has revealed his next project in process: an animated movie more intimate, taking place in today’s Tokyo, the city he loves the most and to which he wants to pay a tribute that will leave its mark forever.
